The Cowley workers chess club was formery known as Morris Motors Chess club, playing at the Morris Motors Athletics & Social club, where It was first established in the 1920s by Lord Nuffield. However, due to development on the Crescent road site the chess club moved to it's present day location at the Cowley workers social club between Towns Road Cowley.The membership has a total of fifteen players, some of them new members. Two teams play in divisions 3 and 4 of the Oxfordshire chess league (OCA) www.oxfordfusion.com/oca
As well as the chess club, the committee at Cowley workers social club has done well in promoting local events, sports and live music. There is a licenced bar with a reasonably priced tariff on display. What more could you ask for!! Drinking beer and playing chess is a good combination on a Monday night from 19.00 hours onwards.
